River,by James Wassell who was Sub. Insp. of the Water Police saying he was coming back with 3 mutineers who are charged with mutiny and murder. The telegram is dated 29.12.83. The mutiny is said to have occurred at 16.11.83.This record is held in the Qld. State Archives at Runcorn, Brisbane.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17572924280223085718noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4406619839841800067.post-62615798976158894342016-06-24T11:55:08.091-07:002016-06-24T11:55:08.091-07:00Many Thanks Mike - this is excellent. There are quite a few newspaper reports online, and entering 'Natal Mutiny 1884' brings them up. By March, the mutineers seem still to be in custody in Australia, awaiting extradition to Sweden for trial. http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=EP18840301.2.33 gives another detailed account. None of the reports seem to disagree with the captain's shooting of the mutineers.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09473539873835066678noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4406619839841800067.post-44686384672045258442016-06-22T01:22:08.981-07:002016-06-22T01:22:08.981-07:00Many thanks for this - it sheds much more light on...Many thanks for this - it sheds much more light on a murky incident - and the newspaper link is fascinating!

Best Wishes: AntoineAntoine Vannerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00490972848447907013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4406619839841800067.post-73698722140646909822016-06-21T17:35:40.440-07:002016-06-21T17:35:40.440-07:00It seems the Captain gave an interview to his loca...It seems the Captain gave an interview to his local newspaper when he got back home, which was America. A much more graphic account of the cabin battle and their injuries. The mate was actually shot in his own cabin and subsequently joined the affray in the Captain's. Johanssen was captured when the others fled below and helped man the ship while the crew were confined. It seems the captain was not prosecuted, although they thought about it and the courts let the mutineers go.
